Common questions, answered honestly.
Tax trouble comes with a lot of uncertainty. Here are straight, plain-spoken answers to the questions people ask us most — no jargon, no over-promising. Still unsure? A free case review is the fastest way to real answers about your situation.
Getting started
I just got a letter from the IRS. What should I do first?
Don’t ignore it, and don’t panic. Most notices have a response deadline, so the safest first move is to have someone read it with you and explain what it actually means. Send us the notice and we’ll tell you what it is, what it’s asking for, and what your options are — the first case review is free.
I haven’t filed in years. Is it too late?
It’s almost never too late to get back on track, and getting current is usually the first step toward resolving the problem. We help you file the missing returns and then work on the balance from there. The sooner you start, the more options you tend to have.
What should I send or bring for the free case review?
Whatever you have — especially any IRS or state notices and letters. If you have copies of recent returns, that helps too, but don’t worry if things are incomplete. Part of what we do is help you gather what’s missing. Please avoid sending sensitive numbers like your full SSN until we’ve securely connected.
What’s the difference between Penn York Tax Relief and Penn York Accounting Services?
Penn York Accounting Services, Inc. is the established parent firm that handles everyday bookkeeping and tax preparation. Penn York Tax Relief is its dedicated tax-resolution practice — focused solely on helping people and businesses who have fallen behind with the IRS or their state.
Enrolled Agents & representation
What is an Enrolled Agent?
An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a tax professional licensed directly by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. It’s the highest credential the IRS awards, and it carries unlimited representation rights — an EA can represent any taxpayer, on any tax matter, before any IRS office, in all 50 states.
Do I have to talk to the IRS myself?
No. Once you authorize us to represent you, we handle the correspondence and the calls with the IRS on your behalf, so you don’t have to face them alone.
Do you help with state tax problems, or only the IRS?
Both. We handle IRS matters nationwide and state tax issues for Pennsylvania and New York taxpayers across the Twin Tiers.
Cost & process
How much does it cost?
The first case review is free. If we move forward together, fees are quoted up front, before any work begins — so there are no surprises.
Can you really settle my tax debt for less than I owe?
Sometimes — through an Offer in Compromise, and only if you qualify. Eligibility depends on your income, assets, and ability to pay, and the IRS makes the final call. We’ll review your situation and tell you honestly whether it’s realistic. We never guarantee a specific settlement or outcome.
How long does resolution take?
It depends on your specific facts and on how quickly the IRS or state responds, so timelines vary from case to case. What we can promise is to keep you informed at each step and to move as efficiently as your situation allows. We won’t quote you a guaranteed timeline we can’t control.
Dealing with the IRS
The IRS is garnishing my wages / levied my bank account. Can you help?
Yes — this is exactly the kind of situation we handle. Once you authorize us, we can contact the IRS and work to release or prevent collection actions where the facts and the rules allow. Outcomes depend on your circumstances, so we can’t promise a specific result, but this is time-sensitive and worth calling about right away.
Will hiring you stop the IRS from contacting me?
Once you authorize us as your representative, the IRS generally directs correspondence about your case to us. We become the point of contact so you’re not fielding the calls and letters yourself.
I’m being audited. Do I need representation?
You’re allowed to handle an audit yourself, but you don’t have to — and most people are glad to have a credentialed advocate in the room. As an Enrolled Agent, Vicki can represent you before the examiner, respond to requests, and help you present your case.
